By the end of this chapter, you should be able to learn:

INSTRUCTING

 

1.1.      Personal hygiene

It is how you care for your body to be into cleanliness.In this situation we should take care on how to:

·        Taking a bath

·        Brushing our teeth

·        Washing our hands

·        Cutting our nails, fingernail or toes

·        Cut our hair

·        Comb our hair

·        Wash our clothes

We are doing this in order to be present with germs and viruses

 

Materials used for cleaning clothes and body parts.

·        Clean water

·        Soap

·        Toothpaste

·        Toothbrush

·        Towel

·        Comb

·        Nail cutter

·        Razor blades

·        A bath brush

·        Lotion

·        Basin

·        Bucket

·        Scissors

 

 

1.2.      General Cleanliness

Refer to how you care for your environment. Examples of environment are:

·        Home environment

·        School environment

·        Hospital environment

·        Market environment

·         

NOTE :In those areas we should make sure they are clean.

 

Tools/materials used for cleaning our environment.

The following are the important materials that should be used for cleaning our environment.

     i.        Broom: This consist sticks, e.g. short broom and long broom used to clean or sweep up our ground/floor.

 

 

  

 

    ii.        Mop: It is a fibber/fibs used for absorbing liquids or mopping the floor.

 

 

 

 

 

  iii.        Squeegees mop: It is a mop consist rubber used to remove water from inside to outside.

 

 

  iv.        Duster: Used to rub chalkboard

 

 

 

   v.        Sponge: Soft material used to wash kitchen tools.

 

 

 

  vi.        Rubber gloves: Used during cleaning up our environment.

 

 

 

 

vii.        Scrub brush: Used to scrub hard clothes

 

 

 

 

viii.        Toilet bowl brush: Used to clean up toilet sinks

 

 

  ix.        Dust bin: used to throw rubbish

 

 

 

   x.        Slasher: used to slash away the grasses

 

 

1.3.      Singular and Plural

Singular means one or individual item and Plural means more then one items.

Examples:

A ball

A glass

A pencil

A book

In singular we use a and an

A                                                      An

A book                                              an apple

A pen                                                        an egg

A ruler                                               an elephant

A pencil                                             an orange

A cat                                                         an onion

A rubber                                            an umbrella

A dog                                                        an ant

A jug                                                 an ox

A cow                                                        an antelope

 

 

Plural means two or many. There are differents roles of changing different words from singular form to plural form. The following are the roles that used to change words from singular form to plural forms

1.   We can add s to the end of the word.

Examples:

   Singular                          plural

                     i.    Book                           books

                    ii.    Ruler                           rulers

                  iii.    Pencil                          pencils

                  iv.    Cat                              cats

                   v.    Rubber                                rubbers

                  vi.    Dog                            dogs

                vii.    Jug                             jugs

 

2.   We add es if the word ends with ch, sh, s, ss, or x to make plural.

Examples;

   Singular                          plural

                     i.    Glass                           glasses

                    ii.    Watch                         watches

                  iii.    Fox                             foxes

                  iv.    Dish                            dishes

                   v.    Brush                          brushes

                  vi.    Church                                churches

                vii.    Box                             boxes

Also we add es in some of the words end in vowel “o”

Example

   Singular                                    plural

                     i.        Echo                         echoes

                    ii.      Hero                         heroes

                  iii.    Tomato                        tomatoes

3.   We add ies when the letter before “y” is a consonant, change “y” to “i” then add “es”

Examples

   Singular                                  plural

                     i.    Baby                           babies

                    ii.    Body                           bodies

                  iii.    Country                      countries

                  iv.    Lady                           ladies

                   v.    Fly                              flies

                  vi.    City                             cities

                vii.    Story                           stories

               viii.    Factory                        factories

                  ix.    Puppy                         puppies

                   x.    Enemy                        enemies

NOTE: If word end in “y” but the letter before “y” is a vowel, we only add s at the end of the word.

Examples:

 Singular                            plural

                     i.    Boy                             boys

                    ii.    Toy                             toys

                  iii.    Key                             keys

                  iv.    Valley                          valleys

                   v.    Tray                            trays

                  vi.    Monkey                               monkeys

 

4.   Words end in f, fe we add ves by removing f or fe and replace with ves.

Example

   Singular                                plural

                     i.        Knife                         knives

                    ii.        Wife                          wives

                  iii.        Thief                         thieves

                  iv.        Leaf                          leaves

                   v.        Calf                           calves

                  vi.        Wolf                          wolves

                vii.        Shelf                         shelves

               viii.        Wolf                          wolves

                  ix.        Loaf                          loaves

                   x.        Half                           halves

NOTE: Some words ends in f just add s.

   Singular                                 plural

                     i.        Roof                          roofs

                    ii.        Belief                         beliefs

                  iii.        Chef                          chefs

                  iv.        Chief                         chiefs

 

 

 

5.   Some words don’t change at all when they are pluralized.

   Singular                          plural

                     i.        Sheep                       sheep

                    ii.        Series                        series

                  iii.        Species                     species

                  iv.        Deer                         deer

                   v.        Fish                          fish

                  vi.        Buffalo                      buffalo

 

6.   Other words change their plural by changing the vowels.

   Singular                          plural

                     i.        Child                         children

                    ii.        Man                          men

                  iii.        Woman                     women

                  iv.        Goose                       geese

                   v.        Tooth                        teeth

                  vi.        Foot                          feet

                vii.        Mouse                       mice

               viii.        Person                      people

                  ix.        Louse                        lice
